Artist’s Statement

Robert Ehle

By Todd Ehle

I like to create works that remind me of my childhood. My parents loved to travel, and they took me to many great museums. I saw Jackson Pollock’s “Moon Woman” at the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice and I was absolutely floored. I wanted to create something that powerful, which I’m still trying to do today. My father was a classical composer, who was also involved in the electronic music movement in the early 1960s. He had a room full of synthesizers he built by hand. The sounds coming from that room would actually scare my friends. My mother swears she saw a UFO in the 50s, and I believe her. I think it’s great fun creating works around an unidentified flying object! This was the environment i grew up in. I took art classes through high school and a year in college, but majored in music. After I started teaching music, I got back to drawing and painting, and never stopped. I love it all. Sometimes I buy vintage frames and paint something to go inside, which of course is backwards, but motivational. The goal is to end up with something that could have come from the mid 20th century, nicotine stains and all.
